Green, I want you green

series of 13 pigmented inkjet prints
from wet-plate collodion negatives
of moss in California
40 x 60 inches
2007

an illustration of Federico Garcia de Lorca's,
Sleepwalking Ballad:

Green, I want you green.
Green wind, green boughs.
Ship on the sea
and horse on the mountain.

Moss and wet-plate collodion photography offer a sympathetic
combination of theme and process; the chemistry of the medium
is able to express the luminosity and soft minutiae of the subject.
Collodion is chosen not only for its painstaking accuracy and
incredible luminosity and texture, but also for its absence of
color. Representing moss without its key sensory attribute
more keenly allows us to feel the pull between intimacy and
distance that would be inherent even in a color photograph.
